The Nokia 6300

I've got an unlocked, black Nokia 6300b (RM-222). I am going to use this spot to document hoops I've had to jump through to make the experience nice.

No Email or IMs!?

First shocker: The version of the Nokia 6300 for the Americas, the RM-222 (as opposed to the RM-217) has the following features missing:

  1. Email Client (supports IMAP4!)
  2. IMPS Instant Messaging
  3. Push-to-talk

Also, the yankee version does not get updates all the time like the RM-222 does. Our phone is capped out at version 4.7-something.

To fix this, we first need to make the phone report itself as a RM-217, and then run the Windows Nokia Software Updater, and have it update our phone to 6.01. After updating, it will be just like the version Europeans use, with the features available. 850MHz band still works. This all worked through VMWare Fusion for me, an OS X user.

Instructions

  1. Install Nemesis Service Suite.
  2. Use NSS to change the product code to 0537620. Write your old code down.
  3. Do a full factory reset with NSS.
  4. Install Nokia Software Update
  5. Update the phone to 6.01
  6. Use NSS to change your code back to original.
  7. Perform another factory reset.

Keep in mind that should Nokia release another firmware in the future, you'll probably need to set the code back to 0537620.

iSync

Apple's iSync supports phones just like the Nokia 6300, but unfortunately the 6300 was left out. Luckily, enterprising souls have discovered that you can hack up the iSync plugins for similar Nokia phones and make them support the Nokia 6300.

Unfortunately, they copied it from phones that do all-day events differently, so all day events will appear to be be events that last from midnight until midnight, as opposed to a memo.

Another guy figured out how to fix this same issue on the Nokia N82, and I was able to reproduce this same thing to produce a correctly functioning Nokia 6300 plugin.

Nokia6300.zip

Just create a /Library/PhonePlugins/ directory if it doesn't already exist, and then drop Nokia6300.phoneplugin into it.
